The NYG&B had a walking tour last year at Green-Wood.
http://www.green-wood.com/
It dates to 1838, but is still quite active with burials just about every day.
The site has history that goes back to the first battle of the Rev.
War, the Battle of Brooklyn. It has a very high point that overlooks
the surrounding area and the NY Harbor. The stature of Minerva, at
their Battle Hill monument, looks across (and down) on the Statue of
Liberty.
Going by car, thru Staten Island, across the Verrazano, up the
infamous Gowanus Expressway, and onto the streets of Brooklyn, is not
a trip to be taken lightly.
The 'R' subway stop is only one block from the main gate. The
neighborhood seems quite safe and well kept. I felt comfortable making
the walk. In fact, there's a high rise, high priced condo/coop
project proposed that the cemetery is fighting because it could block
part of that beautiful harbor view.
Because the cemetery is still so active, and has visitors exploring
graves, history, and would you believe, bird watching, there are a
number of people around ... it's not a deserted, old cemetery.
Just my 2cents,
Maureen
