LAWNSIDE, N.J. (Oct. 13, 2008)-- The Mount Peace Cemetery Association in
conjunction with the Lawnside Historical Society will present a workshop on
African-American Cemetery Restoration, Saturday, Nov. 22 from 10 a.m. to 3
p.m., at Lawnside Borough Hall, 4 Douglas Ave., Lawnside, NJ. To register
for this event, please contact the Lawnside Historical Society, who's

Mount Peace Cemetery was organized in the 1890s and fell into disarray. The
Cemetery Association is trying to build a strong organization that will take
care of the 12-acre site for years to come.

Churches and other groups which maintain cemeteries, civic organizations and
descendants of those interred at Mount Peace are invited to come learn how
to restores headstones, clear landscapes, raise funds and map the grounds.

The presenters are: Paul W. Schopp, the historian whose research led to
Mount Peace's listing on the State Register of Historic Places in July. The
national listing has not yet been announced; Dr. Dennis Montagna of the
National Park Service who has worked on the African American Burial Ground
in New York City and advised groups restoring neglected graveyards; and Ms.
Megan Springate, archaeologist with Richard Grubb Associates who has
completed a study of Mount Peace Cemetery, will discuss strategies that
other groups can employ. She will conduct a walk-through at Mount Peace near
the end of the workshop.

The Society is asking people to record memories of Mount Peace and bring
pictures.

Participants will receive handouts and a box lunch. This program is
supported by the National Park Service, the New Jersey Historic Trust and
the William Short Fund of the National Trust for Historic Preservation.
