Sean,
Thanks for your reply. In reply to your questions, my understanding is that
Andrew and Elizabeth were husband and wife and when my grandfather, Andras
Csurlik, came thru Ellis Island the record shows he went to stay with them
on 33 South Street. A family member told me that was in Elizabeth, but it
could have been elsewhere. John is a brother to Andrew Szabo.
I have been researching using microfilm from the LDS Church since all the
research was being done on Slovakia film. I am now beginning to search for
the people who came to the US. No, I do not subscribe to Ancestry.
I did find how to pull up the census by street, but could not actually do it
since a subscription to Ancestry is necessary. I do have access to an
Ancestry Library Edition so I might try that.
Can you tell me where you found the 1942 info on Andrew Szabo?
Thanks for your assistance.
Dot

Dot:
You would need to determine what ward and/or district the address was in.
This can be done by consulting old atlases or maps, sometimes at local
libraries. I know the State Archives has ward atlases for these time
periods. A search of a modern map shows no State Street in Elizabeth
today, but there may have been one back during the census years. There is a
South Street.
Some information can also be found on the NARA site, helping lead you to a
district or ward: www.archives.gov
Incidentally, I did find an Andrew Szabo on State Street in Perth Amboy
(Middlesex County), in 1942 ... a bit south of Elizabeth.
How are your Andreas, John and Elizabeth related?
How are you searching? Via a site such as ancestry?
