I can relate to that. My grandmother lived in an apartment on Mt. Prospect
Avenue in Newark, and when I was a kid, that street was still cobblestoned. I
can still hear the chains on the cars and trucks and buses hitting those
cobblestones as they went past when we were visiting. Another sound I recall
from those days which involved chains were the old trucks that had chain
drives instead of driveshafts connecting the engine with the rear wheels. You
could spot a chain-drive truck by the sound it made -- a repetitive
"yanna-yanna-yanna-yanna" as the chain rounded the gears on the front and
back ends.
