Allen,

Arlington Avenue sits in Newark's North Ward not Vailsburg. I suggest that
you go to the Old Newark Website at http://www.oldnewark.com/mainindex.php
where old hospitals and cemeteries are listed. I've sent out a note to a
friend that grew up in North Newark to see if she is familiar with a
hospital that once existed on Arlington Avenue -- If she has additional
information I will forward it to you.

Pat

Subject: [NJ-NEWARK] Vailsburg question

Hi,

I am a newbie, and have a question about Vailsburg or old Newark.

I recently obtained a D-C (July 30, 1902) for a man named Fred Jacobs who

died in Vailsburg (Essex Co), NJ. The cause of death, as usual for via
regular mail, seems blacked out but I believe to be as the result of
tuberculosis
(TB).

He only lived in Newark for 2 - 3 months, and his "residence" there is
given as "20 Arlington Ave." He actually lived in Brooklyn, NY at the time
(for
years).

So my question is: why did he go there (to Vailsburg) to "die" after his
diagnosis? Was that street address perhaps where a friend or relative
lived,
or was there some kind of TB Sanatarium on that block? It is very close to
Mt
Pleasant Cemetery.

Much thanks for any clues! Can one look up a reverse address for 20
Arlington Ave in 1902?

Allen
