Subject: [NJ-L] Book 3 Patentees Part1 Bergen County
Date: Wed, 2 Jun 1999 11:33:09 EDT

"SOME EARLY NEW JERSEY PATENTEES
PAYING QUIT-RENTS
territory, viz., Bergen, Essex, Somerset, Middlesex and Monmouth counties,
with certain fixed localities specified, as Perth Amboy, Piscataway,
Shrewsbury and Freehold. While the rents charged are usually to 1696, some
are only to 1680, while a few later entries are as late as April 4, 1705.

Because of the extreme length of the accounts we present herewith only the
names of the landholders and acreage. Illustrating the fullness of the
entries is the following, printed just as written:

"Rulif Vanderlinde Dr:
To his Pattent for 160 acr:at 1/2 d.pr.ac: pr:An: from Ma: 1687; to Ma:
1696: at 8ss: 4d. pr.annum is œ3.15
Contra Cr.
payed John Barclay œ1.7.2
payed James Dundas œ2.7.8"

Those who collected the quit-rents appear to have been (according to
credits), Governor Hamilton, William Hayg (Haig), John Barclay and James
Dundas.

The quit-rent price was, in nearly all instances, 1-2 d. per acre per annum.
Occasionally, it varied. In one case at least it was 50 f. (farthings) per
year; in another 6 d. per year.

The heading of the list thus reads:

"ACCOUNT OF THE QUITT RENTS OF THE PROVINCE OF EAST NEW JERSEY TO THE 25ø
MARCH, ANNO 1696. REC'D BY MR. GEO. WILLOKES, (*) JULY 1697 IN LONDON
(W.D.)."

Then follow names as below, to which we attach the acreage, but not the
quit-rent accounts. In a few cases the matter is too mixed to make certain
the exact amount of acreage, but they are stated as nearly as can now be made
out.
