1822 ~ Newspapers
January 1822 ~ According to the newspapers there were 277,575 inhabitants of
New Jersey. Isaac WILLIAMSON was governor.
January 26, 1822 ~ The tavern of William GOSLING, below Mullica Hill, was
totally destroyed by fire.
Otto JAMES, furniture dealer of Philadelphia advertised in the Herald as did
William HEWSON, also of Philadelphia.
Three men, confined for burglary, escaped from the Woodbury jail.
Joseph WILLSON [WILSON], Henry OSBORN, William WOOD, Joseph CURTS [CURTIS~?],
and Benjamin WILKINS, trustees of the Thoroughfare School, advertised for a
preceptor "qualified to teach Arithmetic, Reading, English, grammar,
Geography, Mathematicks, etc."
Isaac HORNER, Sr. died at Bordentown in his 90th year.
William SAILER was appointed postmaster of Woodbury in place of Job BROWN who
had resigned.
The Enterpean Society, of which J. H. BLACK was secretary, held an adjourned
meeting in the Woodbury Academy, April 3, 1822 at 7 p.m.
Britania TITTERMARY operated a boarding and day school in Swedesboro for
girls aged from 5 to 12 and boys from 5 to 9 years of age. Price $1.75 per
week.
FISHER and BRICK succeeded Joseph C. DILKS as a storekeeper at CHEW's
Landing.
April 17, 1822 ~ Ten men were in Woodbury jail for debt.
Samuel C. BROWN took over the control of the noted blacksmith shop of his
father, David BROWN, at Sandtown [Berkley or Mt. Royal.]
William KEYSER succeeded John RINK, Esq., deceased, as Postmaster at
Swedesboro.
Colonel John B. ROSE, of Indiana, formerly of Cumberland County, was married
to Miss Beulah BOND, of Greenwich.
Elizabeth MAPES died in Gloucester township in her 96th year. Her husband
was a pensioner of the Revolution; her two sons were also soldiers.
Commodore TRUXTON died in Philadelphia in his 60th year on May 5th, 1822.
General John STARK, husband of Molly STARK, died in New Hampshire on May 8,
1822 aged 93 years 8 months 24 days. He commanded at the Battle of
Bennington.
John FORD, of Thompson's Point, found a scow adrift.
James STERLING, of Woodbury, advertised for journeymen carpenters. Israel
LOCK, of near Woodstown, advertised $4.00 reward for the return of William
DAVIS, a runaway apprentice, son of Edward DAVIS.
The ancient brick house near the Lazaretto, said to have been the palace of
John PRINTZ, the Swedish Governor, was destroyed by fire.
Caesar Augustus RODNEY was appointed Ambassador to the Republic of Buenos
Ayres. He was an ancestor to the TWELL family of Woodbury.
Daniel FOCER was appointed Postmaster of Glassboro and Nathaniel SALMON was
appointed Postmaster at Malaga.
Merrick ABBOTT, Jacob DILKES, Micajah DILKES, John COOK, Richard C. LOCKWOOD,
William DAVENPORT, Richard JOHNSON, Samuel STARN and Michael SIMMERMAN were
in debtors' prison at Woodbury.
General Isaac SHINN died in Woodstown on July 24, 1822.
Lightning struck the house of Randal JAGGARD on the Egg Harbor road ~
destroyed a chimney, melted a part of the shovel and tongs, and set off a
fowling piece, tore off its breach, also the headboard of the bed which
JAGGARD, his wife and child were using.
John FERRELL, pensioner of the Revolutionary War, died at his residence near
Blackwood town on July 31, 1822, he was aged 83 years.
Mary MOFFITT [MOFFET] wife of Richard MOFFIT, died October 13th, 1822 in her
63rd year.
John DUNHAM was an innkeeper in Woodbury. Abner BATTEN advertised that
Philip FORD was a runaway apprentice, about sixteen years old.
Nathan LEAKE, Joseph J. BAXTER, Benjamin WOOD, John FRANKLIN, Emerson
CORNWELL, Samuel WILKINS and John HENDRY applied to the Court of Common Pleas
for release from confinement for debt on November 16, 1822.
Abraham WINTERS, of CARPENTER's Landing, lost his life by drowning from his
vessel between Marcus Hook and Chester on the Delaware River.
Dr. J. A. ELKINTON, who had worked in apothecary shops in Philadelphia,
offered his professional services in Haddonfield.
A man named FRIES, who shot at a deer on the banks of the Schuylkill River,
wounded four of his children, one of them mortally.
Dr. William H. M'CALLA [McCALLA ~ McCALL ~ CALL~?] married Jane HARRISON
M'CALLA, both of Bridgeton.
Reverend Jonathan FREEMAN, Presbyterian minister, died at Bridgeton on
November 18, 1822.
Joseph FITHIAN of Woodbury, Joel FITHIAN of Salem, and Charles GARRISON of
Fairfield, advertised several grist and saw mills for sale.

January 12th ~ Read memoirs of ye life of Anthony BENEZET, by Robert VAUX.
January 30th ~ Josiah MILLER of Salem, deceased, 19th inst., age 62 years.
February 22nd ~ Great damage to mill dams, bridges and trees in consequence
of storms and melting snows.
February 25th ~ Examined ye deeds and Declaration of Trust for our Meeting
House lands, executed by Paul COOPER, David WARD, and others, 9th month of
1801.
February 28th ~ A meeting appointed for/by Amos PEISLEY tomorrow from
neighborhood of Crosswicks, New Jersey, formerly of New Hampshire ~ removed
last 12 month 3 years to Crosswicks.
March 15th ~ William OLDCROFT from near Blackwood town, deceased this morning.
March 27th ~ John T. GLOVER's fulling [and cloth dressing] mill burnt
[located near Mt. Ephraim].
March 31st ~ Abigail RICHARDSON, late BLACKWOOD, wife of Thomas RICHARDSON,
Bucks County, Pennsylvania, deceased this morning.
April 1st ~ Hannah WOOD, from East Bradford Meeting, Chester County,
Pennsylvania, began as tutoress in Females Upper School.
April 7th ~ Moraton STILLE, saddler, removed yesterday from Woodbury to
Swedesboro.
April 21st ~ Eunice and Anne STARR, two old maiden sisters, from Maiden
Creek, Pennsylvania were at meeting.
April 29th ~ Mary THORNBURY, a maiden in 75th year of her age, deceased at
John Moore WHITE's house last night. Buried in Friends burial ground at her
request.
April 29th ~ Appointed meeting by George WITHY from Great Britain.
May 2nd ~ Enoch SWAYNE employed as teacher at Deptford Free School.
May 21st ~ At Albertus SOMERS' to see his apprentice lad, George PAUL, who
lies very ill.
May 24th ~ Went to Philadelphia and called at Daniel MILLER's Ironmonger,
North West corner 2nd and New, between Vine and Callowhill Admr [admirer~?]
of Daniel RINK, late of Swedesboro.
May 24th ~ Called to see Sarah SHOEMAKER who enters 92nd year on ye 27th.
Heard Rachel DRINKER, widow of Daniel DRINKER, was interred yesterday, aged
92 years.
May 24th ~ Was at James B. CALDWELL's store on south side Chestnut Street
wharf also, also Israel TRUMP's on north side Marks Lane between 11th and
12th between Race and Cherry Street.
June 3rd ~ A letter from J. HIGBEE, Plumb Creek, Indiana County,
Pennsylvania, asking if Samuel MICKLE is living or not.
June 18th ~ Sarah HOPPER, wife of Isaac T. HOPPER, [abolitionist] deceased
this day in her 47th year. [NOTE: It is said, that he at one time, lived in
the Daniel MITCHELL house in Woodbury.]
June 26th ~ John TATUM and Anne BIDDLE married today in Philadelphia.
June 30th ~ Mickle WHITALL called and bid farewell [again], expects to sail
as 1st mate tomorrow for Canton, China.
July 2nd ~ Hannah YARNELL, widow of Peter YARNELL, deceased at Byberry.
July 19th ~ Charles TOWNSEND, about 45 years old, watchmaker, of
Philadelphia, called to see me, says his father John TOWNSEND was born 1
month 10th day 1748 OS.
July 29th ~ Anne Cooper WHITALL, daughter of cousin John S. WHITALL, deceased
this p.m., aged 31 years 5 months 10 days. Born 2 month 19th day 1791.
August 3rd ~ Rachel SAUNDERS, Sr. [SANDERS], widow of Thomas SAUNDERS,
deceased aged 70 years, 7 months 27 days. Born 12th month 6th day 1751.
August 4th ~ Attended funeral of Rachel SAUNDERS.
August 5th ~ Mary REEVES [REEVE], widow of Arthur, was interred today in the
90th year of age. Also, her son, Arthur REEVES, Jr., deceased today.
Likewise, Bathsheba CLAYTON, wife of Edward CLAYTON. Also, infant child of
Joseph SAUNDERS [SANDERS].
August 6th ~ Thomas CARPENTER's wife, Mary, deceased last night at age 74
years lacking 33 days.
August 10th ~ William SAILORS' daughter about six years old, deceased
yesterday.
August 13th ~ John STEPHENS, deceased last night at aged about 40 years.
August 15th ~ Son of Isaac DOUGHTEN [DOUGHTY], about seven years old; and
Jacob WILKINS interred in Friends Burial Ground by permission.
August 16th ~ Heard Samuel COOPER's widow, Prudence COOPER, at Camden,
deceased 14th inst. in her 84th year.
August 23rd ~ Joseph NEWBOLD in prime of life, deceased of yellow fever this
morning.
August 23rd ~ Amos CAMPBELL took off ye shingles on newest part of ye house
built in 1790, side next to street, and put on new shingles.
August 25th ~ John BROWN, son of David BROWN, deceased yesterday.
September 2nd ~ Robert COOK's wife, Lydia, deceased 31st ult.
September 5th ~ George BRANNER, Jr. and Hannah DAVIS, daughter of James
DAVIS, announcement. Married October 17th.
September 9th ~ Amos FITHIAN, brother of Doctor James FITHIAN, deceased this
morning, aged 21 years. Taken to Bridgeton today. [NOTE: Amos was a member
of the Harmonic Society of Woodbury and the Society members wore black crape
on their left arm for thirty days.]
September 12th ~ Dr. Thomas HENDRY, deceased this evening, aged 75 years last
month, [a patriot of the Revolution]. The longest an inhabitant of Woodbury,
except Mary MILLER wife of Ephraim MILLER and daughter of John SPARKS,
deceased, who was born and continued in Woodbury and her husband told me she
is between 62 and 63 years of age.
September 13th ~ Doctor Thomas HENDRY buried in Presbyterian ground. Visited
ye house of mourning in company with his son-in-law, James RICHIE.
September 13th ~ Beulah CLEMENT, widow of Samuel CLEMENT surveyor, deceased
at age 84 years. New York greatly distressed with yellow fever. Great
drought, streams and wells dried up. Much sickness.
September 15th ~ Hannah NEWBOLD, widow of Joseph W. NEWBOLD, deceased last
evening in Philadelphia.
September 18th ~ Woodbury Herald gives names of 14 persons deceased within a
few days past.
September 29th ~ William HOPPER's infant child, Sarah, buried.
September 29th ~ James SAUNDERS' wife is gone to Gideon SCHULL's to see her
sick sister, Mary RICHARDS.
October 2nd ~ Theodosia WILKINS, widow of Jacob WILKINS, deceased this
morning.
October 3rd ~ Enoch SWAYNE in Deptford Upper School, left us and proceeded to
Woodstown as teacher there. He has just finished one and a quarter
Schoolkeeping.
October 14th ~ On Females' School Committee, in upper room. Agreed to
continue Hannah WOOD another quarter commencing this day at $2.00 per quarter
for reading and writing, and allow her $2.50 for either grammar or geography,
and $3.00 for both together, and to make up any deficiency to her.
October 17th ~ A wedding, George BRANNER< Jr., son of George, to Hannah
DAVIS, daughter of James DAVIS.
October 20th ~ William SAILER [SAILORS ~ SAILERS ~ ?] deceased ye p.m.
October 24th ~ John STREET, Anne, his wife, and two sons, Zadoc and Samuel
STREET here from Salem Ohio on their way home 350 miles which they expect to
reach in nine or ten days. They reside about one mile from Charles STRATTON.
October 29th ~ Noah JONES interred yesterday.
October 31st ~ Engaged Dubre KNIGHT, a young man of Burlington, as a
qualified teacher at $2.50 for reading and writing and arithmetic. $3.00 for
grammar and geography and mathematics, $5.00 per quarter. He was recommended
by John GUMMERE.
November 1st ~ Sister HINCHMAN says she will be 66 years of age ye 12th inst.
November 6th ~ Mary HILLMAN, wife of Joseph HILLMAN and daughter of John
WOOD, wheelwright, deceased and interred this day.
November 7th, 8th, 9th ~ Vendue of personal estate, shop goods, etc. of
William SAILER, deceased October 20th last.
November 12th ~ In p.m. seven of us of our particular family, went to Jesse
SMITH's Innkeeper in Woodbury, to see ye natural curiosities in his yard. A
male lion, two leopards, one very antick [antique] baboon, two of ye monkey
species, very antick, and an ant eater, total seven beasts. Adults 25 cents
and children 12 and a half cents.
November 12th ~ Sarah KNIGHT, wife of John KNIGHT, Sr. and formerly widow of
Isaac JONES, deceased this day in 63rd year of her age.
November 12th ~ William HARVEY deceased this morning in ye 70th year of his
age.
November 13th ~ Attended funeral of William HOWEY [HARVEY ~?].
November 16th ~ Sarah BECKETT, wife of William BECKET, (and daughter of
Constantine LORD, deceased) died in ye 57th year of her age.
November 18th ~ Set in new lamp post in front of my store.
November 19th ~ George and Joshua GLOVER brought to jail for military fines
today and were liberated by Jacob GLOVER this evening.
November 21st ~ Thomas KNIGHT and Rebecca ANDREWS, daughter of Benajah ANDREW
were married at meeting.
November 28th ~ David TATUM, deceased yesterday in his 40th year, at
Wilmington, Delaware.
November 28th ~ Barzilla JEFFERIES' wife and nephew, Elijah JEFFERIES lodge.
December 5th ~ Samuel REEVES [REAVES], saddler, broke small bone of leg while
endeavoring to kill a hog.
December 14th ~ [Major] John PISSANT, of Raccoon Creek, deceased 10th inst.
in his 68th year.
December 15th ~ Priscilla HUNT from Indiana, and Rachel WAINWRIGHT from
Salem, at meeting.
December 22nd ~ Daniel PRICKET from Indiana at meeting.
December 26th ~ Joseph W. BENNETT's wife, interred.
