Extracts from Diary of Samuel MICKLE (1746~1830) ~ #30

1828
January 1st 1828 ~ Anne ROE [ROWE], wife of Henry ROE, deceased last night,
aged 67 years, 2 months, 27 days.

January 7th 1828 ~ In p.m. at Fire Company meeting and Fire Association
meeting being ye 1st fire association meeting since said association was
incorporated. Appointed officers.

January 26th 1828 ~ Cousin Josiah TATUM [TATEM] with a petition or
remonstrance against opening of ye navigation of Woodbury Creek. In, or
about, 1754 [1764 marked over 1754] a dam was erected and navigation stopped
about which this neighborhood was in a great ferment on said occasion.

January 28th 1828 ~ Monthly Meeting, but alas the disorder and confusion.
Two or three more up and speaking at ye same time. Some disowned and some
dealing by their respective meetings were here intruding on, and in, the
meeting and would not withdraw although often requested so to do. Therefore,
the meeting adjourned to meet next 5th day 31st inst., first appointing a
committee. "I have been thinking of Separatists who (by their conduct) were
speculating to drive Friends from their meeting houses, and that it will be
necessary for Friends, sooner or later, to apply to ye civil authority for
redress."

February 2nd 1828 ~ At annual meeting of Woodbury Library Company ye p.m. and
brought home ye "Life and Travels of John HOWARD" to read.

February 5th 1828 ~ Wife of Dr. Jeremiah J. FOSTER deceased this a.m. Samuel
HUDSON says he heard ye frogs singing ye evening, so warm has the weather
been several weeks past.

February 25th 1828 ~ Monthly meeting day which held till about 2:20 p.m. and
on account of intruders adjourned to meet at 9 tomorrow morning.

March 2nd 1828 ~ Cousin Esther MILLER, wife of William, deceased yesterday,
aged 50 years 4 months 4 days.

March 6th 1828 ~ A seceder wedding at meeting today viz: Samuel OGDEN and
Martha LIPPINCOTT, daughter of Samuel B. LIPPINCOTT. Orthodox Friends
withdrew.

March 22nd 1828 ~ Robert STEPHENS finished plastering tenement No. 4 bought
of Enoch ALLEN [ALLYN]. Settled with him in full, 6 ΒΌ days at $1.50.

March 25th 1828 ~ Isaac SNEATHING took possession of black John COOPER's
house yesterday.

March 25th 1828 ~ Thomas HOPPER and his mother moved into tenement No. 4
today.

March 27th 1828 ~ Charles HOPKINS and Lucy HUGG married today.

March 27th 1828 ~ Prep. Meeting. Josiah STOKES, Sr., George BRANNER, Sr.,
George BRANNER, Jr., Samuel PACKER, James DAVIS, Howard ABBOTT, and Seth
MATLOCK's cases as Seceders were brought forward, and to go to Monthly
Meeting. Meeting held till after 2 p.m. I suppose the Seceders don't deny
what they are charged with. I am so hard of hearing could not understand
them, nor any but ye Clerk, and think it right their cases be forwarded to
Monthly Meeting.

March 30th 1828 ~ Elizabeth ROBSON [ROBISON ~ ROBINSON ~ ?] here from England
on a religious visit.

March 31st 1828 ~ Monthly Meeting. Left meeting about 20 minutes before 3
p.m. leaving ye two clerks with each a table before them, viz: Orthodox
Josiah TATUM [TATEM], and Seceder Seth MATLOCK [MATLACK], ye latter (an
intruder) officiating at his table. Orthodox meeting rose about 15 minutes
before 6, or near sunset.

April 6th 1828 ~ At cousin Samuel WEBSTER's house. Informed that William
SIMMONS had deceased at Porto Rico the 12th of last month.

April 26th 1828 ~ In ye Friend [publication] of this date, is an account of
decease of Pattison HARTSHORN, aged 84 years with whom under ye firm name of
HARTSHORN & LARGE, I, when following store keeping used to deal for dry
goods. Also, an account of decease of John MORTON in ye 89th year of his age.

April 27th 1828 ~ William TRUMP, son of Isaac TRUMP of Philadelphia, here ye
p.m. and took tea.

April 28th 1828 ~ Elisha DAWSON, a Seceder preacher from Maryland, held
forth. An abundance of Seceders attending Monthly Meeting.

May 7th 1828 ~ Our jail roof took fire ye a.m.

May 18th 1828 ~ John HASKINS, of Burlington, deceased on 8th inst. in his
65th year of age.

May 20th 1828 ~ Isaac COOPER, of Yorktown, South Carolina, to which place he
removed from this place about 3 years since, visited us. [Isaac M. COOPER,
the clockmaker ~?]

May 26th 1828 ~ Monthly Meeting. Hicksites intruded and transacted their
business first, and then Friends.

June 2nd 1828 ~ Biddle REEVES [REEVE] deceased this p.m., aged 61 years, 7
months, 28 days; born 10th month 4th day 1766; interred in family burying
ground.

June 6th 1828 ~ Visited ye school taught by George M. PAUL at Haddonfield.

June 11th 1828 ~ In Woodbury Herald, ye date, met with an anecdote respecting
David James DOVE, a Schoolmaster, to whom I went to school in ye days of my
youth; being a noted teacher at Gloucester and formerly in Philadelphia.

June 16th 1828 ~ Keturah, 2nd wife of James MATLACK, and sister of his first
wife, Elizabeth, deceased; she being from home on a visit to her sister, ye
widow of John KELLY [KELLI]. Buried in Presbyterian Burial Ground.

June 26th 1828 ~ Prep. Meeting in which were two Clerks, each sitting at a
table, ye Hicksite's clerk, first officiating at his table, and when done and
Hicksites withdrawn, ye Orthodox Clerk officiated.

June 30th 1828 ~ Monthly Meeting in which Hicksites clerk officiated, and
after they had done and withdrawn, Isaiah GREEN, a Hicksite, intruded and
obliged ye Orthodox Friends to adjourn upstairs into ye select meeting room,
and after time came down again and finished ye business.

July 4th 1828 ~ Engrossed my lengthy will and executed it.

July 24th 1828 ~ Cousin Samuel MICKLE's case to be forwarded to our next
monthly meeting. When informed by Joshia LORD and Samuel WEBSTER that they
visited him as overseers, replied "I worship in Spirit. You were not sent
from Heaven. I have nothing to say to you."

July 28th 1828 ~ Monthly Meeting. Various Seceders attended, and among them,
Amos LOWER [LOWE], who made preachment. Isaac HOPPER also intruding.
Friends adjourned to select meeting room, and ye women to the Females' School
house upstairs.

August 4th 1828 ~ Isaac CHEESMAN, Sr. [CHEESEMAN], here in a.m. In p.m.
Franklin DAVENPORT left papers for me on chancery business, and I afterward
went to his office with said papers and cash.

August 12th 1828 ~ Reading a pamphlet entitled "Tender Advice and Counsel by
way of Epistle" by William PENN, also a brief account of "Friends Principles,
their Rise and Settlement in America" by Anthony BENEZET.

August 19th 1828 ~ Executed deed for Susanna SIN, grandmother of Thomas
SCHUMO.

August 21st 1828 ~ Prep. Meeting, where ye Seceders in presence of Friends
appointed (there being but about 7 Seceders) a committee to take possession
of all Friends' property, viz: ye land Meeting House, School House, etc.
Men Friends appointed a Committee to assist ye Women's Prep. Meeting
respecting ye care of Meeting House. Also another Committee to get of
William COOPER all the deeds and other writings belonging to Friends, late in
possession of his brother, James COOPER, deceased, in order for a renewal of
trust, James SAUNDERS [SANDERS] and Samuel MICKLE for the latter. About 18
Orthodox Friends attending.

August 22nd 1828 ~ Committee appointed to serve copies of disownment on ye
eight families, or part of ye families of diverse Seceders, viz: Moses RULON;
Jonathan RULON; Amos PEASLEY; John HAINES [HAYNES]; William PINE; Joseph OWEN
[OWENS]; Jacob LIPPINCOTT; and Josiah STOKES.

August 24th 1828 ~ William NEWBOLD of Springfield, Burlington County, New
York, deceased on 17th inst. in 62nd year of age.

August 26th 1828 ~ Sarah PEASLEE [PEASLEY], wife of Amos PEASLEE, deceased
about 5 ye morning, and rather suddenly and unexpected by the family. Her
husband in ye State of Ohio sowing ye seeds of Secedership as a minister.

September 1st 1828 ~ George PAUL, this day commenced partnership with James
MICKLE.

September 3rd 1828 ~ Joseph V. CLARK and David WHITALL's wife, Anne, both
deceased.

September 10th 1828 ~ Sarah WOOD, widow of James WOOD, deceased this morning
aged 70 years 3 months 6 days.

September 12th 1828 ~ Mary CALDWELL, daughter of James B. CALDWELL, deceased
this day. My birthday commencing my 83rd year.

September 18th 1828 ~ Cousin Joseph WHITALL informed me he received a letter
ye morning from one of our yearly meeting committee, Josiah TATUM [TATEM],
who attended the yearly meeting in ye State of Ohio which stated said meeting
was in great confusion. The Hicksites would not let the Clerk act, broke a
table in pieces, and carried the Clerk out of the house; and that several of
ye rioters were taken up by ye civil authorities.

September 20th 1828 ~ A meeting today at ye Court House for ye purpose of
forming a Society to be called A Moral Society, I suppose chiefly designed to
discourage horse racing. A race ground of a mile in circumference being made
near Swedesboro as I was this day informed.

September 24th 1828 ~ Lydia BROWN, daughter of Jonathan BROWN, deceased, aged
30 years 10 months 29 days.

September 26th 1828 ~ In Philadelphia. Cousin George FOX deceased about 10
days ago, aged 69 years.

October 1st 1828 ~ Thomas MANN's daughter, Lovinda, from Philadelphia,
informed me [that] her mother-in-law, Rhoda MANN, deceased 19th ult.

October 9th 1828 ~ Change of Meeting days mentioned.

October 11th 1828 ~ Big tavern near Court House sold at my suit to Peter
RAMBO.

October 12th 1828 ~ A Hicksite preacher, Joseph FOULKE, rose early and held
forth. He sat next to cousin Joseph WHITALL, the latter early tapped me on
my shoulder and gave me his hand.

October 13th 1828 ~ Mentions anniversary of his dear wife's death, as always.

October 18th 1828 ~ Sarah CRESSON and Sarah FOLWELL, daughter of William
FOLWELL, arrived from Philadelphia in stage and lodged.

October 18th 1828 ~ Mahlon SKILL and Elizabeth DAWSON married.

October 19th 1828 ~ Deborah COOPER, daughter of William and grand daughter of
Benjamin COOPER, interred at Woodbury.

October 22nd 1828 ~ Job COLES [COLE] deceased at Mt. Holly on 9th inst., 80
years old according to Herald [newspaper].

November 2nd 1828 ~ Read diary in Friend Vol. 2 of Dr. Samuel EMLEN, Jr.

November 5th 1828 ~ This evening voted for electors for Congress.

November 17th 1828 ~ Hannah, daughter of Josiah STOKES, deceased at Howard
ABBOTT's, aged 17 years 6 month 20 days; buried from her father's house.

November 22nd 1828 ~ Howard ABBOTT, deceased last night.

November 28th 1828 ~ Mary WESCOTT deceased yesterday ye 27th in 72nd year of
age.

December 2nd 1828 ~ John Ladd HOWELL buried in Friends Burial Ground.

December 28th 1828 ~ Josiah STOKES informed ye meeting ye Elias HICKS
intended holding a meeting in Friends Meeting House next 7th day ye 3rd of
next month. Cousin Joseph WHITALL informed ye meeting that Elias HICKS was
ye person who had caused so much division in Friends Society, and that he is
a person whom all Friends yearly meetings in ye world testified against.
