d 1 May 1860 Maria Hopper, widow, 69, d Paterson, b Ramapo, NY, d of dropsy,
father Renerd Hopper.
We will let Maria Hopper figure that one out.
Here is a good example of how 19th cenury NJ vital Records were often filed
under the woman's maiden name.: Mary Hopper was the widow of Henry Felter and
should have been Mary Felter in her death record.

736 MARIA HOPPER, dau. of Rinard Hopper (#325) and Hilletje
Vanderbilt, was b. 4 Jan 1786, probably in Ramapo Twp. Rockland Co, NY and
bap. 5 Feb 1786, at Clk.RDCh. "Maria Hopper" d. 17 May 1860 in Paterson of
dropsey, a widow aged 69, dau. of Rinard Hopper (NJ VR-AC 485). On 3 Jul
1804, "Maria Hopper m. Henry Felter" (Rev. Brinkerhoff's mar. rec. p.9). He
died sometime after 18 Jul 1835 when mentioned in his father-in law's will
and bef. 17 May 1860. It was apparent from her father's will that Henry
Felter was not one of Rinard's favorite people!! References: Hendricks
#697; Hopper #6-602; [Note: From her age at death (NJ VR) she would have been
b. ca. 1790-91 and therefore the dau. of Rinard's second wife, but she named
a dau. after his first wife, and she would have been only 13 or 14 at her
marriage, if she were b. ca. 1790!.]

735 JAMES (JACOBUS) HOPPER, son of Rinard Hopper (#325) and Hilletje
Vanderbilt, was b. 17 Apr 1783, in "Middletown, NJ" [now Montvale] (NJ VR of
death); bap. as "Jacobus" on 11 May 1783, at Clk.RDCh. (bap.#1007). He d. 2
Mar 1859 in Paterson, of palsy, a 76 year old, married farmer, son of Rinerd
Hopper (NJ VR AC 444). In 1827 when his dau. m. she was liv. Ramapo, NY.
In 1850, they were in Paterson he was a 68, a laborer, born in NJ, with
$1,500 of land and she was 58, born in NY, with them was Maria Hopper age 32
b. in NJ. (possibly dau-in-law). On 23 Aug 1807, "Jacobus Hopper m. Maria
Myers" (Rev. Brinkerhoff's mar. rec. p.12). Mary (Maria) Meyer, the dau. of
John (Johannes) Meyer and Catharine Van Houten was b. in "NY" and b. "(16?)
Dec 1790 and bap. 9 Jan 1791" at Kakiat RDCh.(#110), as "Maria, dau of Jan
Myerst and Katrina Van Houten." Mary, wife of James Hopper of Hamstead,
Rockland Co. was referred to in the will of John Meyer da. 10 Apr 1811
(Rockland Co. Liber B. fol.1 Budke abstract #222). Maria Meyer Hopper joined
the Kakiat RDCh. by profession of faith 23 Nov 1809. The will of James
Hopper, of Paterson, Passaic Co. NJ; not dated. and pro. 2 Apr 1859,
mentioned: wife Maria - all real and personal estate while widow then exr. to
sell real and personal estate and divide equally among Catherine Peterson,
heirs of dau. Ellen Demarest, son Rynard Hopper, Margaret Westervelt and
Sarah Doremus. Exr: wife Maria (who signed with her mark), son Rynard, and
son-in-law James P. Westervelt (Cheryl Todd abstract)(Passaic Co. B-225).
