Technically (or legally), Bergen Township was established by Peter
Stuyvesant on Sept 5, 1661, it became part of (old) Bergen County in 1683.
Following the Rev. War, it was incorporated as a Township in 1798. The
Township was carved up into various other entities (part to Van Vorst
Township in 1841, part to North Bergen Township in 1843, part to Bergen Town
(Jersey City) in 1855, etc.) until eventually what little was left of the
Township was absorbed by Bergen Town in 1862. By then, Hudson County had
already been formed (1840) from the southeastern part of Bergen County. For
most historians and genealogists, probably the most important aspects of
this deal with identifying what and where records are. To my knowledge,
what few records exist from the old government (such as it was) consist
mostly of early court records. All have be reproduced in the NJ Archives
Series (at the NJ State Archives and on CD ROM). Church records, as I
mentioned in my previous email, are available in several places including
the Holland Society Year Books of 1913, 1914, & 1915 and compiled in several
reprints.
