Subject: [NJBERGEN] Ramapo poem

Vi Burkhard sent me a poem written in 1844. It seems as if it is written
from a gentleman from NY to a female in NJ. It is addressed Dear Cous and
signed your 99th Cousin and Sincere friend W. H. C.

What does 99th cousin mean? Who is W. H. C.? Is there a Conklin with those
initials?

This letter and poam was in the collection of Julia Everson.
Julia Everson descended from the Courter family through Isaac Courter and
Sally Storms. The C could stand for Conklin instead of Courter or just about
any other name with C. The person would have to be single in 1844 and the
handwriting is wonderful.

The poem describes a visit he had just had to Ramapo and how he had gone by
steamboat and car.

This is an example of a few lines.

How wide the fruitful valley spreads!
How high the mountains rearer their heads!
How smooth the peaceful waters flow!
How rich the scene at Ramapo!

Signed W. H. C.

Judith Courter Ullman
