Dave,
Neither the naturalization papers nor the declaration of intentions
contain the parent's name. However, if you can find his declaration
of intentions, it may contain the date of his arrival in the US.
With that information, you can find his passenger list which may
show his place of origination in Germany. Alternatively, you may
check Filby's Germans to America index to find his passenger list
(if he came after 1850). (You may want to look at my Research Guide
to Immigration and Ships Passenger Lists at:
http://home.att.net/~arnielang for information and examples on how
to research these records)
Also, you may check his marriage certificate. My grandfather's
certificate issued in NYC in 1881 listed the parent's names of both
the husband and wife.
The baptism or confirmation church records of his children many
times listed the city of birth of the parents of the child.
