I have been beating my head against an incredibly hard brickwall trying to
find the parents of Mary Ellen Rogers, who was born 11 Feb. 1818. Family
lore has her born in Orange County, d/o John Rogers and Mary Ellen Stevens.
After scouring every record I could find , I can find no John Rogers. Pages
from a family bible show siblings (or cousins) and I thought I would post
them and what family information I have found and see if this rings a bell
with anyone. The family seems to migrate between Ringwood/Boardville and
Orange County.
Harriet Rogers married David Babcock before 1850. She was born about 1825.
The Babcocks are on the 1850 census in Warwick. They moved to Pompton Twp.
in Passaic NJ before the 1860 census. Children include John J, Adelia,
Nehemiah, and George. She was born in NY.
John Rogers married Mary Williams, who died in 1849. He was born 1820-22.
Mary appears to be d/o Stewart Williams. He is in Monroe in 1830, Pompton
after that.Born in NJ, John died in Panama on his way to the Gold Rush in
California.
William Rogers was born about 1817. He married a Harriet and had sons George
W. (abt. 1843 NY) and Whilfield (Whitfield? abt. 1847 NJ). He is in Pompton
1840 &50. He supposedly died near Middletown NY in 1855. Born NY.
Nicholas Rogers was born about 1813 and married Catherine Jacobus. They had
a son Philip. He died in Montville, NJ, in 1873. Born NY.
Ann Rogers was born about 1827; she died in 1862.
Jacob Rogers died Sept. 1868. He married a Katie and had a son, Jacob.
Other names in the bible include:
William M. Clark died Dec. 1869
Margaret Clark died March 1874 .
Ellen Roney died Aug. 9, 1867
Margaret Stickels died March 1874.
I don't know how or if these last ones fit into the family.
Several of the Babcocks above were buried in a family plot in Boardville
before being moved to Pompton Reformed. Also buried there are Thomas Rogers
(died 1835 in Pompton), Mary Williams Rogers, and Mary Ellen Rogers's husband
James Riley.
Her father was a blacksmith. William was also. John was a forgeman.
Thanks for sitting through this. If anyone above looks familiar, let me
know.
Mahalo and take care, Kevin
