I'm helping a friend out regarding the following men listed on the Waldwick, Bergen Co., NJ War Monument. Does anybody have additional info on the following men.
World War I
John L. Dow
Born in Paterson, NJ (Not Confirmed)
Lived on Wyckoff Ave. (don't have exact address) in Waldwick (Orville Township)
Killed in action on November 1, 1918
What I've found so far.
Pvt., U.S. Army, 311th Infantry Reg., 78th Infantry Div., entered service in NJ. He is buried at Meuse-Argonne American Cemetery, Romagne, France; plot B row 09 grave 07. He was the only WWI soldier on the list entered in NJ's "Soldiers of the Great War", Vol.2, pg. 255.
His parents are Benjamin F. and Ida C. Dow and had 2 brothers, Robert L. and Benjamin Jr. (that I've located so far).
Born in Paterson, NJ (Not Confirmed).According to the 1900 Census, he was b. Jan. 1894 and living in Orvil Twp, Boro. Of Waldwick.
Lived on Wyckoff Ave. (don't have exact address) in Waldwick (Orville Township)
KIA in action on November 1, 1918, in Belgium.

Walter Tunis Nightengale
August 11,1895 to November 1, 1918
Born in Waldwick
Most likely Catholic and went to Saint Luke's Church in Ho-Ho-Kus, NJ
Had 2 sisters on was named Alice
His mom died around 1933 (Don't have name)
His dad died in May 1945 his name was Tunis Nightengale
What I've found so far.
He was a Corporal, U.S. Army; 303rd Field Signal Battalion, 78th Infantry Div.; entered service from NJ; buried at the Meuse-Argonne American Cemetery, Romagne, France; plot F, row 21, grave 27.
He was the son of Tunis and Anna (Ann A./Alice A.) Nightengale. His sister Loretta M. m. John Nutry (Nutrey), s. of John and Rose Nutrey, and Alice m. a Sutheland (NJ? Or NY?)

Walter Hammond
May 4, 1893 to September 28, 1918
Mother's name was Hannah
He was born in Waldwick and attended the Methodist church on Franklin Turnpike in Waldwick
What I've found so far.
So far on Hammond, I've only been able to locate the census from 1900-1930 on his family. He is one of the few I've been unable to locate his burial. Again the date might help me since it looks like he could have been KIA too. I can't locate any military info either.
William Demarest
August 6, 1891 to September 30, 1918
Born in Oradel, NJ
Mom's name was Nancy
Methodist most likely went to same church as Walter Hammond
What I've found so far.
He was a Pvt., UP.SO. Army; Field Remount Squadron 313; entered service from NJ; buried at the Suresnes American Cemetery, Suresnes, France; plot C, row 06, grave 14
Still have to locate his census, just so many Demarest to go through. He is most likely a descendant of Jean des Marest, a prominent citizen and resident of Beauchamp in the Province of Picardy, France. His son David des Marest was the immigrant (April 16, 1663, reaching New Amsterdam).
William P. Zazzetti

Most likely Catholic and went to St. Luke's in Ho-Ho-Kus
Lived at 80 Libert Street in Lodi (Not sure if "Libert" should be Liberty on document)
Born in Massguare, Italy
He was a Pvt., U.S. Army, 147th Infantry Reg., 37th Infantry Div.; entered service in NJ; MIA or Buried at Sea; Tablets of the MIA at Meuse-Argonne American Cemetery, Romagne, France.
So far I am unable to locate any census for him.
World War II
Harry P. Wilson
Died on May 22, 1942 no other info.
What I've found so far.
He was a Pvt. First Class, U.S. Army Air Forces; #06873828; 19th Squadron, 20th Air Base Group; entered service from NJ; buried at the Manila American Cemetery, Manila, Philippines; plot F, row 4, grave 100.
I haven't located any census yet because his name is a common one.
Roland Webster Kennedy
June 10, 1921 to September 26, 1942
Only child
What I've found so far.
He was a Pvt. First Class, U.S. Marine Corps.; Serial# 00332675; entered service from NY; Missing in Action or Buried at Sea; Tablets of the Missing in Action at the Manila American Cemetery, Manila, Philippines; awarded the Purple Heart.
I haven't found any census so far on his family because it's a common name. I did find his wife's family in the 1910 census for the 5WD Hackensack and 1930 2WD Hackensack, Bergen Co., NJ.; Helen Hewitt, dau. Of Allen W. and Belle Hewitt.

Herbert D. Gibb, possible middle name is David
Born in 1924 died March 11, 1944
Lived on Bergen Ave. in Waldwick
Dad's name was David Gibb Jr. 1896-1940
What I've found so far.
KIA March 11, 1944. Pvt., Serial# 32778682
According to the 1930 Census of Clifton, Passaic Co., his parents were David Gibb, 34; age at marriage 26; he was b. in Scotland; he was a Plaster contractor.
He married Frieda Wehrkamp about 1922, her age at marriage was 20. According to the 1930 census, she was 28 at the time and was b. in Germany. She and David had a son, Herbert 6, b. in NJ and a daughter Audrey 4, b. in NJ.
At the time of the 1930 census, Frieda's parents and a brother were living with them. Her father, Magnus Wehrkamp, 57; age at m. 25; b. in Germany; Painter contractor. Her mother, Emma, 54; age at m. 23; b. in Germany. Her brother, William, 20, b. in Germany; Painter contractor.
There is no 1940 census available yet. I still need to go backwards as far as I can go, 1900, 1910 and 1920.
With his #32778682, we can locate his War records now.
I still have the city directories to do too.whatever is available.
He's one of the six that I can't locate his burial yet. But looking at the date of death, I would assume he was KIA.his grave was NOT recorded on the site I found all the overseas graves at. http://www.abmc.gov/ I got lucky with another by just putting in google search the death date. So I will try the same with his.

Had 2 sisters
His position was Utility in the Merchant Mariner, killed on board the Jacksonville on August 30, 1944. The tanker was torpedoed and sunk in the NE Atlantic, with a crew of 48; AG 30.
Had 2 sisters (according to the 1930 census, he has 1 brother, Gerald and 6 sisters.Louisa, Helen, Irene, Ruth, Shirley and Regina).
So far I've only done the 1930 census on this family.

He was a Captain, U.S. Army; #O-526260; 12th Infantry Reg., 4th Infantry Div.; entered service from NJ; buried at the Henri-Chapelle American Cemetery, Henri-Chapelle, Belgium; plot H, row 9, grave 54; awarded Bronze Star, Purple Heart with Oak Leaf Cluster.
I've only looked for the 1930 census so far and I can't get the page to view, so I'm not sure it's him yet. The location is Riverside, Bergen Co.

What I've found so far.
He was a Pvt., U.S. Army; Serial# 51203709; KIA, July 20, 1953, in Korea.
Private Masterson was a member of the 65th Infantry Reg., 3rd Infantry Division. He was KIA while fighting the enemy in North Korea on July 20, 1953.
Vernon, Raymond
What I've found so far.
b. 1930
Pvt. First Class, U.S. Army; Serial# 51134261; MIA-Presumed dead; d. July 22, 1952, in Korea.
Private First Class Vernon was a member of the 9th Infantry Reg., 2nd Infantry Div. He was listed as MIA while fighting the enemy in North Korea on July 22, 1952. He was presumed dead on February 19, 1954. For his leadership and valor, Pvt. First Class Vernon was awarded the Bronze Star and the Purple Heart.
