There seem to be quite a few "Harriets" in the Hoctor line,
but the Harriet Hoctor who was a well-known professional dancer was born in Hoosick Falls NY, 25 Sep 1905 and died 9 Jun 1977, probably in New Jersey.
This Harriet was the daughter of Timothy Hoctor and
Elizabeth Kearny of Hoosick Falls NY. Harriet's aunt Annie Kearney, who lived in New York city, arranged for her very young niece to stay with her there in order to study dance professionally. Before long Harriet landed her first dance role with Ziegfeld, and later was in a few films with Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers. In 1941 she opened a ballet school of her own in Boston and taught ballet students there for a great many years.
This Harriet Hoctor never married. She had 3 siblings: two brothers, Martin Francis ["Frank"] and John, and a sister Eloise. "Frank" was a well-known art director in New York city, John was a professional golfer, and Eloise was a member of the editorial staff of the Reader's Digest for 25 years. I knew Harriet's sister-in-law, Elizabeth Mc Donald
Hoctor ["Frank's" wife] some years ago, and am in contact now with her niece Harriet Hoctor Groeschel as well.
There are a number of internet websites featuring this Harriet
Hoctor which provide a good deal of information about her
life and her career. Worth taking a look if you are interested!!
