Hello:
I'm new to this Hudson County list. Anyone ever go to the Trenton archives
looking for Hudson County records? Any luck? Hints for people who have
never gone there?
Thanks in advance.

Hi Karen,
I've been to the Archives in Trenton a few times and it's well worth the trip,
however, it can also be frustrating. I always make sure that I'm there by 8:30
AM , in order to sign up for a microfilm reader(similar situation in the
Municipal Archives in Manhattan, too many researchers, not enough
(working)equiptment and/or room). Vital records from May 1, 1848 to May 31,
1878 belong to the Archives. They have microfilm records that belong to the
Vital Statistics section of the State of New Jersey that can be
accessed(normal waiting period from State of NJ is two months and the fee is
$4.00) and photocopies are $.50(death and marriages from June 1, 1878 to 1940
and birth records from June 1, 1878 to 1923).
The Archives rotates the researchers every 90 minutes in order to allow every
researcher an opportunity to access the automatic microfilm readers or if very
crowded, any(read hand-crank) microfilm reader.
The Archives has been in the process of moving, so it would be wise to call
ahead to make sure they are open(Tuesday through Friday) or if any collection
is unavailable. The telephone number I have for the Archives is (609)
292-6260.
There is a lot of information at the archives, not only vital records. The
staff is about the most helpful I've encountered, yet - very nice,
knowlegeable people.
I hope this helps you!!
