As a listowner of the Rootsweb list for Orkney Scotland, I was informed
that there was a problem with the server used by Rootsweb for all of the
mailing lists- there was a hacker attack, the hacker didn't, or couldn't
destroy the mail, but they did destroy important configuration files. The
volunteers who run the Rootweb Cooperative took the opportunity to put the
lists on a new server, I think they also moved it to another physical
location. There was some mail lost, or delayed, but not very much.

This situation underscores the need for all of us who benefit from
Rootsweb's services to become members, sponsors or donors. Rootsweb is a
very valuable resource IMHO, and it is run entirely by volunteers, and
supported by individual and corporate gifts. To support Rootweb, visit
http://www.rootsweb.com/rootsweb/how-to-subscribe.html Membership is $12.00
a year, Sponsorship $24.00 and to be a Donor the gift is $100.00 The
benefits described at the how-to-subscribe page are not up-to-date, see
http://www.rootsweb.com/rootsweb/members/ if you become a "Sponsor-Plus" at
$50.00 a *year* you can get 25 mgs of space for a homepage at Rootsweb.

Okay, end of my pitch for support.
