Subject: [NJHUDSON-L] St Peter's on Tonnellel Ave - my experience if anyone is interested
Date: Tue, 6 Jul 1999 17:31:13 EDT
Hi Everyone!!
I just wanted to let you know I finally made it to St Peter's Cemetery on
Tonnelle Ave in Jersey City. (Records are held by Holy Name) The gates are
open after 9AM on a Sunday. Any other day by appt only. It was a pretty
hectic ordeal but well worth it. After almost getting rearended a few times
trying to get into the cemetery, you can only access the NARROW gate (which
is right up to the curb practically) from the eastbound lane of Tonnelle Ave.
(We found out the hard way and had to make a U turn.).There is two lane
traffic both east/westbound. (maybe its north/south) We were lucky enough to
find the grave in about 10 minutes even though there are no markers or signs
or anything to tell you where the graves or sections are. Getting out of the
gates was really tricky because we were on a grassy "uphill ramp" and had to
wait for no traffic ( which was impossible) or a kind person to let us out
when the light down the road turned red. What they say about NY drivers is
crapola because it was a New Yorker who let us out after 5 minutes of
waiting. There were beggers on the corners and we prayed for green lights
getting off and on the skyway to get back to Union County. Overall, it was
worth the trip. Hope this helps someone.
