I renewed my subscription for online images thru
ancestry.com. There are aggravations to be sure & I
have cussed a lot, but the $30 is certainly worth it
to me to have access to the census images. Images are
indexed & linked thru 1840 and part of 1850. In most
cases it works. Problems: The Mr. Sid download makes
zooming in easier, but it also results, for me anyway,
in images taking a lot longer to load, several minutes
sometimes. Apparently there is no way to to "unload"
Mr. Sid when you desire for faster browsing. Thus,
browsing thru an ED or county is unrealistic unless I
have a lot of time. (Sometimes I get my housework
done in between "loads!") A page is missing from one
census; unfortunately, it happens to be the page my
ancestors are on, according to Ancestry's index! I
like to use the full page enlargements, but I've had
to give it up because often after a few page changes
my computer locks up. (It's often necessary even when
you know the page number to do "trial & error" page
changes since you can never be sure which of sometimes
2 or 3 numbers on the pages is the one you want; and
sometimes a number covers 2 pages, sometimes 1,
sometimes even more.) But even though searching takes
longer than using ordered microfilms, the convenience
of searching at home, to me, makes up for it. It will
be much better when everything is indexed. I have no
idea how long that will take. Hope this helps.
