I found something interesting I would like to share with other researchers. Maybe others already know about this, but since it was news to me I thought I'd pass it along.....
I was reading Rootsweb Review of Jan 9, 2002, to which I subscribe. Going thru the list of different sites I came across the following two subjects:
Maine, Penobscot Co, Old Town, Maine Church Records, 1849-1861
http://userdb.rootsweb.com/churchrecords/
Mass, Middlesex Co, 1890 List of Poll Tax Payers of the Town of Maynard; 191 records
http://userdb.rotsweb.com/tax_voter/
note: underscore between tax & voter
When I clicked on these two urls I was very surprised to see it covered not only Maine or MA, but the country.
I went to the "search box" on each page and put in only the surname, no other info, so it searched all over. There are so many early marriages and tax info used for lost censuses. I used my MATHEWS and came up with quite a few hits & then also put in my MATTHEWS and came up with more. Same with all my other names I am researching.
I didn't find any of my relatives, but there were VA records & Alabama records, California records etc. It seemed that there were names that I have seen people posting queries about.
Do yourself a favor & check these out.
Good Luck...
Jeanine
Noramlly I bypass these files if I feel they don't pertain to me...ie: not having anyone in Maine or MA. The only reason I clicked on is because I haven't had any luck with my Foley's who were in Newfoundland in early to mid 1800's & thought perhaps they made there way down thru Maine etc to NJ.
