A few suggestions
Have you tried the ports Boston, Baltimore and Philadelphia?
Is this Patey-- have you tried spelling variants? Is it a German or
French surname?
Where did they first show up after these 6 years?

Subject: [NJHUDSON-L] ships/passenger lists on line
Thanks to everyone who answered my question about name change.
Here's another question I'd like an opinion on:
I have a seven year period where I can't find my ancestor. It is the
time
when he left either France or Switzerland and arrived in America, either
on
the NY or NJ docks, between the years 1849-1855
I've tried to see if there was any exit lists out of those countries in
that
time period and ended up at a dead end.
I've tried searching all of the passenger lists coming into New York
between
that time frame - nothing
I know he was here, married and had his first child's birth in 1866.
Any suggestions?
Joan
