Hoboken Cemetery, located in North Bergen, is the subject of the lead story in today's Bergen Record.
The New Jersey Turnpike Authority is removing remains from Hudson County's potters field in order to build a new exit. It had planned to move the remains to Hoboken Cemetery. However, human remains have been found in the section of Hoboken Cemetery that the Turnpike Authority had planned to use.
According to the Record, Hoboken Cemetery says it has no record of burials in that section of the cemetery. However, Hoboken Cemetery's burial records are incomplete. My great-great-grandmother died in 1880. Her death certificate says she was buried in Hoboken Cemetery. When I attempted to find her grave, I was told by both Hoboken Cemetery's former caretaker and its former receiver that Hoboken Cemetery does not have any records of pre-1900 burials. A former cemetery worker told the Record that believes the section in question was Hoboken Cemetery's potters field.
The Record also states that burials in Hoboken Cemetery "date back to 1858." Additionally, the Record states that Marion Yovan is Hoboken Cemetery's current court-appointed receiver.
