Peg
I hate to be a bearer of bad news - but I wouldn't be surprised if an 1882 birth record
was not found in NYCity. It may not have been recorded. They were not as reliable in New
York City as they were in NJ until much closer to 1900.
The other possibility is that the staff would not have checked enough possible variations
of a name like Schmitt. It might have been found if they had checked Schmidt or Schmid or
Shmidt, Smith, etc. etc. Possibly the record might be there - but the child is unnamed or
has a different name - "Male child Schmidt" or "Jacob Anton Schmitt" could be your guy -
but how would the staff know that? You might want to hire a researcher to check again for
you. They would be able to spend the time to check all the variant spellings and
alternate choices for names.
You can find names of many researchers who do research in New York City at the following
websites:
www.apgen.org
http://www.apgen.org/localchapters/newyork/index.html
If you are interested in hiring someone - you could also contact me off list and I can
recommend a couple of reasonably priced researchers that I know.
