Carol:

Well, you can ignore my previous response! I just checked the original 1900
census record, and see that all but their oldest child were born in the U.S.
So unless they were untruthful about that too... which is not very likely, they
had to have been in this country before December 1888, when Nelly was born.

I believe that anyone who came into New York from a foreign port was processed
at Ellis Island during the time period from 1892 until 1924, even if they were
U.S citizens (I discovered that a member of one of my family branches was
listed in the Ellis Island database several times, even though his family had
lived in this country continuously since the late 1600s. As it turns out, he
worked as an engineer on one of the transatlantic ships.) So it is possible
that this family had gone back to England for a visit. (Their first trip here
was before Ellis Island, so they wouldn't be in that database.)

Maybe the National Archives would have a record of their immigration. Or
perhaps you could find them on one of the many passenger lists that are
available on-line and in books. Hopefully you'll have more luck than I have
with some if my ancestors. My grandfather came from England via Canada, and
although I found his naturalization records at the National Archives, I have
yet to find anything on his immigration into this country. Same with my German
great-grandparents, who arrived here in the 1880s. I know more about the
ancestors who arrived here in the 1600s than these later immigrants!
