Hi All,
I'm catching up on my mail, so I'm a little outdated in answering.
Joyce, what a lovely memory about Asbury Park! Some of it rang bells
with me. Sadly, I don't remember your father, probably because we drove to
Asbury usually.
Steinbach's was truly the loveliest story. We always looked forward to
it's Christmas decorations because their display department was the best.
My mother used to know the man who was head of it but I can't remember his
name.
My step father was a veterinarian as were his father and son. Grandad
lived at 705 Asbury Avenue, two doors from the Fire House (where he was a
volunteer for years), which was originally his veterinary office until he
and my father built Millar Animal Hospital in Oakhurst in 1929. We often
went to Grandad's house for Sunday dinner and I remember all the wonderful
wood work in the house and the great newel post leading up the stairs. It
was beautifully decorated at Christmas (just to get back with the theme).
During the 50's (during high school and college -- I graduated from
APHS, still a beautiful school) I worked for both the College Shop and the
Dainty Apparel, two women's clothing stores around the corner from each
other. What great stores with lovely (expensive) merchandise and oh, so
busy during the Christmas rush! I have great memories from both those
stores, too, working there and shopping there. My brother-in-law worked at
Jay David's men clothing store on Cookman avenue for his high school/college
years (I'll have to ask him how long he worked there).
I'd like someone who could remember back to the 20's. My grandmother,
Margaret MacLean, had "The Cake Shop" for years there and in several
locations I believe. I'd love to find a post card or photo street scene
that showed it...that would be beyond my wildest dreams (Santa, are you
listening?).
Well, that was fun.........
Joyce, I hope you kept that message you posted, to add to your memoirs which
I'm sure you're writing.
Oh, one other thing. At the Neptune Historical Society last month we
had as our guest speaker Karen Plunkett-Powell author of the brand new
"Remembering Woolworth's: A Nostalgic History of the World's Most Famous
Five-and-Dime". It's published by St. Martin's Press, NY and should be in
the stores this month. Great Christmas present for those interested in
history and nostalgia. He and his family spent several summers in AP, at
1109 Grand Avenue for a while if not all the time. He listed his first
summer cottage in Asbury Park in 1892. It's fun reading.
Enough,
Nancy, Neptune, NJ (right next door to Asbury Park)
