I have never found my Aaron VanPelt's ancestors, although I have a
cousin that found HIM in Middlesex County, NJ. Her instinct is that he's
from the Staten Island branch of the family. Does anyone recognize any
of these names? Thank you for looking. Gail in NE

AARON VAN PELT - my 4th Great Grandfather

I believe Aaron Van Pelt was born in New York. He married Elizabeth
“Betsy” Gilliland, daughter of Daniel Gilliland and Mary Parden
(Pardum); she was born 10 December 1786 in New York. The deaths on their
tombstones are 2 September 1863 and 10 September 1870 respectively. They
are both buried in Follrod Keebaugh Cemetery, Orange Township, Meigs
County, Ohio.

Aaron and Elizabeth are found in the 1850 census for Bedford Township,
Meigs County, Ohio, where Aaron's occupation is a carpenter. Their
children are: Jacob born about 1812 and died 1851, Ohio; July Ann born
about 1818, New York (Found in 1850 census with parents.); Susan born 7
November 1820, Washington, Ohio, and died 7 May 1856, Ohio; Aaron born
about 1823, Ohio; Patience M. born about 1827, Ohio. (She is listed in
the 1850 Olive Township census living with Sidney Halsey and wife, Susan
Van Pelt Halsey.) Information about Aaron's and Elizabeth's children
follow.

Jacob Van Pelt (1812) married Sophia Chapin, daughter of Benjamin and
Martha Chapin. Sophia was born about 1816 and died 1899, Ohio. Their
children are: Martha Jane born about 1837 who married William Wood; and
Jefferson Dewitt born 19 January 1845, Meigs County, Ohio. In the 1860
Bedford Township census "Sofiah" is found living with Moses Merrick (31
year, blacksmith) and J. (Jefferson Dewitt) Van Pelt (15 year),
following her first husband's death. Jefferson Dewitt (1845) married
Mary M. Burleigh 6 January 1866. Mary was born 26 September 1845. Their
children include: Mayo born 2 February 1868, Ohio and died 28 May
1933; Milo born 8 March 1870; Sophie born 11 June 1873; John born 4 May
1876; Iona born 10 October 1878; and Jesse Delano born 18 August 1885.

Susan Van Pelt (1820), my fourth great grandmother, married Sidney
Halsey 1 January 1840 Meigs County, Ohio. Sidney was born 1 July 1814
in Meigs County. Susan is buried in Follrod Keebaugh Cemetery. Their
children are: Ferdinand Augustus born 24 September 1842, Meigs County;
and Augustus born about 1847, Ohio.

Aaron Van Pelt (Jr.) (1823) married Julia (?), who was born about 1830,
New York or Ohio. Living with his parents in the 1850 census, Aaron's
occupation is farmer. He is a farmer living with his wife, two
children, and his parents in the 1860 Bedford Township census. Their
Ohio born sons are: George about 1853 and Elmer about 1860.

Unfortunately, we have not located further information on July Ann or
Patience M. Van Pelt.

My ancestor, Ferdinand Halsey (1842), moved to Midland Township, Merrick
County, Nebraska in 1878. Jefferson Dewitt Van Pelt, his first cousin
mentioned above, arrived in 1879 and lived with Ferdinand's family until
his home was built. Many descendants of Aaron Van Pelt and Ferdinand
Halsey continue to live in Merrick County, Nebraska.
