I am searching family infromation on a very early James Miller who is
mentioned in this snip:
http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~familyleaves/family_centers/gravatt/weary.html
"By deed dated 13 May 1702, Robert Burnet late of Lathantie, Scotland,
transferred to Peter Watson of Freehold 400 acres of land on Milston Brook
between Robert Holman, the Pinn Hill and John Reed. This was part of the
land confirmed to Robert Burnet, Proprietor on 7 October 1700. Another land
description reads, "to John Reid of Hortencie, in right of Col. Andrew
Hamilton of 200 acres in Monmouth Co. betw Wm. Parrant on Milston Brook near
Robert Holman's formerly Abraham Brown's where the old Indian path crosses
the brook and JAMES MILLER". These descriptions show that Robert Holman's
land was on Milston Brook and was bordered by unsurveyed land and so would
indicate that he was one of the first settlers of the region then designated
as Upper Freehold Township, Monmouth County, New Jersey. According to Edwin
Salter in his History of Monmouth County, Robert Holman in 1689 purchased
land from Daniel Estile (Eastall). To date, I have been unable to locate any
official document relating to this purchase."
Also, anyone know where "Hortencie" was located?
I also found this on the early James MIller:
http://boneshadow.com/genealogy/vantine/f54.htm
quotes on page 40 of the book "Franklin Twp., Somerset Co., NJ : A History by
Wm. B. Brahms Published 1998 Franklin Twp. Public Library this passage:
"Research Note 664, 1708, Lot 6, , Somerset Co, NJ
Lot 6 -- Miller's Lot
Lot 6 was originally assigned to Proprietor Robert Burnett of Scotland in
1682. He patented it as 608 acres to his agent, James Miller. Miller deeded
it to Governor Robert Barclay in 1687/8. when Barclay died, the lot went to
five proprietary shareholders: John Johnson, George Willocks, John Harrison,
Cornelius Longfield and Michael Hawden."
James Miller is also mentioned in the Will of John Hampton
http://www.harrisonheritage.com/jhamptn.htm
"John Hampton and John Reid had been selected in Scotland as joint overseers
of the venture in America. Both were of the Quaker persuasion on their
arrival, Reid would later affiliate with the English Church and be designated
as Surveyor General of East Jersey the same year (1703)."
The Hampton webpage also has some interesting general history of the early
Scots settlement.
James Miller in C-106 Monmouth Co Deeds sold land by attorney to Thomas Warne
who is also mentioned in the Hampton page. He is listed as having land or
having sold land all over East Jersey but does anyone know where this James
Miller actually lived? He had land in Perth Amboy near Thomas Warne as per
Monette.
With Millers there is alway the possiblity of more than one James Miller but
the connection to John Hampton and John Reid seem to localize him to Upper
Freehold area of Monmouth Co. where there are later Millers listed - Jacob
Miller taxed in 1731 and Thomas Miller in 1758.
Thanks for any insights offered. Mike Miller
