AN OLD WAR HORSE
"Billy" MILLS HAS MADE MANY FRIENDS AND STILL RETAINS THEM

"There upon that truck goes the man who gave me the first ticket I ever
voted in Paterson," said a member of a firm of well-known tobacconists. The
writer looked and saw the familiar form of ex-Freeholder MILLS, looking none
the worst for his three score and over. "Yes, that was a great many years
ago; I think it must have been a Republican ticket. I think it was an
unimportant election, but Billy was greatly interested electioneering for
his man as if his life was at stake. Yes, he has paid dearly for his
political experience, politics, like politicians , are ungrateful." "Here,"
the speaker continued, "is an old man now; one who has grown old in
Republican harness, spent thousands of hours in the service of that party,
only at last to be mulcted to the tune of eleven hundred dollars through his
readiness to befriend one (at that time big guns) of the party. I understand
that the old man has been missed at his accustomed post on election day,
which fact does not surprise me." "Wa de culled folks do foah a fren wne de
ole man Mills dies? Why de ole man ain't sick; I seed him luggin. O yass,
wen he am gone, well I tell you, Boss, dah will be a heap ob mawnin at dat
ole man's funerul; he am be de best fren wat I eber knowed on dis yearth,
and wen he am no moah I jes doant kyar how soon de Angel Grebel toots his
hawn foah me."
