Monday was
held this Thurs. at 10:30 at the home of Rev. M. T. Gibbs officiated.
Burial in the Waterloo
cemetery.
Mr. Smith was born in Waterloo August 10, 1845. His early education
was obtained in
the little stone school house east of the village, and later he attended
Blairstown and
Pennington Seminary. For fifty years he was associated with his brothers on
the general store
and milling business, a heritage from his father and grandfather.
Mr; Smith represented Byram Township on the Board of Freeholders many
years and for
a long time was director of the board. Later he represented the county in
the State Senate
for a term of three years as did his father, Peter; his Uncle Nathan, and
his brother Samuel T.
Smith. This record; it is believed, has never been attained by any other
family in the county.
At the death of his brother, Samuel T., in 1898, Mr. Smith succeeded to
the directorate
of the North Ward National Bank of Newark, which position he held at the
time of his death.
A man of positive ideas, his many friends in a lifelong business and
political career knew
where he was to be found. Five years ago his wife died.
In his early youth Mr. Smith united with the Methodist church of
Waterloo. At the time of
his death he was president of the board of trustees. Surviving Mr. Smith
are his son, S. Roy
Smith, of Newark, and two brothers, Seymour R. Smith, president of the
Hackettstown
National Bank, and N. Augustus Smith, of Newark.

Hope you find something...
