Wantage Recorder dated Friday, March 1, 1895 -

Mrs. Sarah Westfall Bennet, widow of the late James Bennet
who died in 1869, of Montague, NJ, and mother of James
Bennet Jr., of the Port Jervis Gazette whose daughter Sarah
is one of the teachers of our public school, died on the 21st
ult. (last month as opposed to inst. which means this month),
at the residence of her son James, aged 93 years. She was
a descendant of one of the first families who settled in Sussex
county, and indeed there is a probability that one of her
ancestors was the first white person who did so. His name
was Jurian Westphael, or Westfall. Upon a map of plots laid
out for the village of Minisink at the southeastern end of Big
Minisink Island, upon the Jersey side of the Delaware River, his
name appears as owner of a plot in 1725. His father at that time
appears to have been owner of lands adjacent, which he had
previously occupied both in Pennsylvania and New Jersey. Jurian
Westfall, immigrant from Westphalia, says Nearpass, married
Maritje Hansen and was residing near Kingston in Ulster Co, N.Y.
as early as 1654, as is shown by a deed. His son, Johannes
married Maritje Jacobz Cole, and moved to Minisink between
1689 and 1700. His daughter, Claritje, is entered on the Kingston
church books as having been born (baptized) Oct. 31st, 1700 at
Minisink. She was the first white child born in the vicinity, but the
probability is she was born on the Pennsylvania side of the Delaware
River. His son Jurian who owned the Minisink plot now Daniel Everetts,
was born in Kingston April 27, 1681. He married Christina Van Kuykendall,
daughter of Jacob Van Kuykendall, born April 2, 1682, by whom he
had three children. She dying he married for his second wife Maritje
Codeback, whose nephew, Abram Codeback, was a great Indian guide
and fighter during the Revolutionary war in Deerpark. By her he had
five children. She survived Jurian and afterwards married William Cole,
living to be 100 years old. Her son Daniel by her first husband, married
Maria, daughter of John Westbrook, who owned a farm on Minisink
Island. Their son Solomon had a son David who married Jemima
(Codeback) Westfall and their daughter Sarah is the person of whom we
write. She leaves surviving her four sons, David S., Wilhelmus W., Galen
and James, of Carpenter's Point. The funeral took place on Sunday at
3 o'clock p.m. at Tri-states chapel.

Hope this helps,
