Dr. Andress Passes Away
Sparta Doctor Dies at His Home in
That Village Tuesday Morning
Dr. Theophile H. Andress, one of the best known, and in former
years, one of the most prominent physicians and surgeons in
Sussex county, died at his home in the village of Sparta, after a
brief illness, from the infirmities of age. Dr. Andress has been an
invalid for several years, his physical decline dating from a runaway
accident between Newton and Sparta, several years ago, from the
results of which he never fully recovered.
In his early days Dr. Andress was a prominent figure in county
affairs, and stood high in professional life. He was very active in
county affairs and was prominent in a group of Spartans, such
as James B. Titman, Henry Folk, William Earl, Thomas O'Malley,
James E. Decker and William E. Ross, all of whom preceeded
him to the great beyond. His activities began back in war times,
and continued until the date of the accident, mentioned above.
Dr. Andress was a successful physician and his field covered a
wide territory. His services were frequently sought in consultation
with men in different parts of the country in his own profession. He
was widely known throughout the country and in his best days was
always prominent in Republican politics. He was well posted in
public affairs and was always up in current events, a great reader
and thoroughly versed in most public questions. Personally he
was of a very genial nature and easily made and held many
friends.
For many years Sparta was a centre of a strong financial
group, locally speaking, and they were all prominent in
commercial and political affairs. The Doctor was practically
the last of the old group. He had resided in Sparta forty-nine
years, with the exception of one year spent in Newton, and
had practiced medicine there practically all that time. In
addition to the practice of medicine for a number of years
he conducted a drug store in the village.
Dr. Andress was born in Middletown, N.Y. and when the
Civil War broke out he was interrupted in his medical course
at the College of Physicians and Surgeons, New York, and
served one enlistment. Returning to New York, he was
graduated in 1864 and took up the practice of medicine.
Dr. Andress was twice married, his first wife having been
Miss Sarah C. Cutler, of Morristown, who died in 1883.
Besides his widow, who was Miss Elizabeth Kinney Hoffman,
who he married in 1891, he is survived by five children of
the first marriage, Fred R., Hampton and Miss Mary V.
Andress, all of Brooklyn, William of Westbrook, Me.,
and J. Howard King, of Nashville, Tn. The children of the
second marriage are Miss Gertrude Andress, of Paterson,
and Russell Andress, at home.
The funeral was held from the house at 1.30 o'clock this
(Thursday) afternoon, Rev. John G. Lytle, officiating and
burial will be in Newton Cemetery.
Happy Hunting,
Cathy DiPietro
