More tidbits from past queries I've answered, I have no further
information or personal connection to these families:
Sussex Register, Sat. 24 June 1848
Died
Near Hackettstown, Warren Co, on the 12th inst., of hasty
consumption, Elizabeth D., wife of Samuel Johnson, in the 49th
year of her age.
The deceased was for many years a member of the first
Baptist Church, Newton, and was a faithful follower of the Lamb.
A word of consolation was often heard to fall from her tongue to
those who were afflicted. She dies in the full prospect of a bright
immortality. Her last moments were peaceful and triumphant.
NJ Herald Thurs., 17 May 1906
On Friday last the remains of Samuel Johnson, in charge of
Undertaker Frrank Gillen, were brought to the Presbyterian
cemetery and interred beside those of his first wife. Mr.
JOhnson was remarkable for his extreme old age, having
lived to the age of ninety-six years. We are informed that he
leaves a widow four years younger. It may be of interest to some
of our readers, a few of whom will remember the deceased,
as one of the Johnson family, that he was born and raised on
the old homestead near Amity, where the new McRoy summer
residence now stands. Fifty or sixty years ago it was his habit
to drive from the farm to the Presbyterian church of this place to
attend service and of very recent years he has made periodical
visits to the country to view the plot that was to be his final resting
place. The first wife was Mary Rose, of Roseville, whom he married
in his early manhood. Deceased died at the home of his daughter,
Mrs GeorgeMcCracken, of Dover. The other children are: Job,
of Dover; John, of Iowa; James, of Vienna; Dr. Samuel, of Califon;
Mrs Rebecca Slater, of Morristown; Mrs Maria Franks, of Elizabeth
and Mrs Abram Canfield, of Irvington. Deceased was an uncle
of Ira K. Johnson, of Houses and John Johnson, of Branchville.
Hope this helps,
Cathy DiPietro
