I think you're right - the person you spoke to didn't want to be bothered -
the women at the hall of records though (which is on the corner of the
park) are very helpful. When you enter, turn to the right to enter the
records area. The clerks there have to get the marriage book I talked
about. If you know the date, you might find a record there. Not all
marriages were recorded, however - (Howard Case printed up those records
(and there's an index!) in 2 volumes, which the library has.) The deeds are
in the same building and the Surrogate (has wills and estates) is upstairs.
