County Almshouse Manager Passed Away Wednesday Evening
Heart Failure the Immediate Cause--He was a popular official and Good
Citizen.
Albert O. Smith, the popular and well known steward of the county almshouse,
died at his home, connected with the institution, at 6 o'clock on Wednesday
evening. Mr. Smith's serious illness began about two week's ago, when he
sustained a violent attack of gastritis, resulting in heart trouble, which
was the immediate cause of his death. Mr. Smith was a son of the late James
T. Smith, and was born on the homestead farm near Washingtonville. He was
aged fifty nine years. The greater part of his life was spent on his
father's farm in the occupation of a farmer, at which he was progressive and
successful. He was an intelligent, well read man, who enjoyed the confidence
and esteem of all his neighbors and acquaintances. He was serving his sixth
year as steward of the almshouse and was one of the most popular officials
in the county. He is survived by his wife, who was a Miss Vought, and by
one son, Arthur O. Smith, now grown to manhood, and who has been assisting
his father.
The funeral will occur at the home at 1:30 o'clock on Saturday
afternoon, and will be in charge of Ivy Lodge of Odd Fellows of Newton, of
which he was a prominent member. The Board of Freeholders will also attend
in a body. Interment at Newton.
