OBITUARY
David McCarthy
The news of the death of David McCarthy, which occurred at Middletown at
five o'clock on Monday morning last , was received with great regret by his
extensive circle of acquaintances through out the county.About nine weeks
ago he was taken severely ill with an attack of typhoid malaria. For four
weeks his condition remained about the same, and upon advice of his
physician he was removed to the sea coast at Coney Island, where he was
attended by a prominent physician. While there the weather proved very
unfavorable and he contracted a severe cold, which necessitated his removal
to his home at Franklin Furnace. His condition still seemed unchanged, and
two weeks ago upon advice of a friend he went to Middletown with his wife
where he was treated by Dr. Eager, a physician who has been remarkably
successful in malarial disease. From that time until last Thursday, it was
believed by his friends that his condition was somewhat better, and hopes
were entertained of his recovery. On Friday he was worse and the hopes of
the previous day were abandoned. He sank rapidly, and died as above stated
early Monday morning.
Deceased was born in the county of Cork, Ireland, in 1848 , and was in
his 37th year. He came to this country about 19 years ago, and settled at
Franklin Furnace, where he has since resided. During the greater part of
the time he was engaged in the mercantile business. Being of a progressive
and genial nature he built up a large and lucrative trade, and at the time
of his death was accounted one of the most prosperous business men of the
county.Besides his store at Franklin, for a time he conducted a store in
Ogdensburg, and at one time was interested in a general store in Paterson.
He was a thorough miner, and was quite extensively engaged as a contractor,
having for a number of years acted as a sub-contractor for the Passaic Zinc
Company, at Ogdensburg, and for the past three years operated the Schofield
mine in Morris county. In politics, up until about five years ago, or at
the beginning of the anti-ring movement in this county, Mr. McCarthy was a
Democrat. Since that time, he has acted with the Republicans. He has held
various town offices, and was Justice of the Peace for a number of years.
In religion Mr.McCarthy was a Roman Catholic. He was a strong supporter of
all matters connected with his church, and a leading and pushing spirit in
all matters pertaining to the welfare of the people of his race and creed.
His removal by death is a great loss, both to his family, business
associates and the people whom he has befriended in countless ways. Mr.
McCarthy held a life policy of $4000 in the Provident Life, of Philadelphia.
He leaves a wife and three children.
The funeral which was very largely attended took place at the Franklin
church at 9 o'clock on Wednesday morning last. A requiem mass was
celebrated, which was participated in by Rev, Father Kammer, of Jersey City,
McManus, of Newton, and Hill, of Franklin. The choir of St. Joseph's
Church, Newton, lead by Miss Florence Fields, furnished the music for the
last rites.
