In Memoriam
Mrs. Susan M. Calvin wife of John N. Calvin, and daughter of the late John
and Julia Hunt, whose decease occurred in Lafayette, August 5th, 1885, was
born near Fredon, in this county, on the farm which her grandfather settled
126 years ago. Her home has been in this vicinity where she has many
friends who testify to her worth for she was loved and cherished with
affection. Possessed of a cheerful disposition, she had the happy faculty
of making others at ease in her presence, winning their confidence and
respect.l An earnest Christian worker in the church, of which she was a
highly esteemed member, it can be said of her, "She hath done what she
could." A dutiful and affectionate wife; a bereaved husband deeply mourns
his loss. A kind and indulgent mother; her two surviving daughters will
greatly miss her self-sacrificing consideration. A loving sister; brothers
and sisters bow in grief under their affliction. For years she has been
more or less feeble, and at different times apparently near the end of her
earthly existence, but she was always ready to go, and when the messenger of
death finally came, she shrank not from his presence, but deliberately gave
her family farewell counsel and instruction, and calmly awaited the time of
her departure, going down into the grave as into her bed at night. To her,
death was a valley, not of tears, but of life, light and glory, and she
walked on without fear. Though she suffered much during her last illness,
she finally passed away without a struggle, gently breathing her last, as
one that falleth asleep. "For so He giveth His beloved sleep."
Her funeral was attended at the Presbyterian church in Lafayette, Friday
afternoon, by a large concourse of sympathizing friends, all three of the
pastors taking part in the services. Beautiful pillows and wreaths of wild
and cultivated flowers in abundance were contributed by friends in Lafayette
and Newton. And amid their fragrance her remains were borne to their last
resting place in the Yellow Frame Church Cementer, beautiful for situation,
and commanding a lovely and striking view of the mountain and valley; while
the sweet and precious memory of virtue and goodness is left for us to
cherish. Loved in life, she is remembered in death.Prized and respected on
earth, she will be sanctified in Heaven.
Whew. they don't write them like this anymore. A shame though that they did
not mention the names of next of kin. Linda
