Bud,

The last time this question was raised it was suggested that shoemaking
or shoe cutting was the answer. However, I've been looking at someone
who one one census is recorded as a "cord(s)wainer," while the
(Philadelphia) directory says of him "cordwood."

No doubt some else can resolve this mystery.
