I have to concur with John's entire post regarding city directories and
county histories. In my experience, relatively poor common laborers who
don't even own real estate are often listed in city directories, and it's
hard to imagine them paying for that privilege. And yes, the
biographically entries in late 19th and early 20th century county
histories were generally paid for, so only the well-off are listed.
These were usually based on information provided by the subject and
minimally researched (if at all), so it is important to verify anything
significant found in a county history.
