Gilbert S. "Gillie" Lopez, 83, a prominent retired educator, administrator, and coach for the West Las Vegas School System, passed away on Wednesday evening at his residence following a courageous bout with cancer. He was preceded in death by his wife, Rosaline; his parents, Savino and Salome Fernandez Lopez; his sister, Amalia Arguello; brothers, Felipe and Alfonso Lopez; and a son, Gil A. Lopez. He is survived by two sons, Dr. Michael Lopez and his wife, Ginny and Danny Lopez and his wife, Lisa, all of Las Vegas, NM; one daughter, Amalia Black and her husband, Steve of Albuquerque, NM; one brother, Gustavo Lopez and his wife ,Frances of Wagon Mound, NM; eight grandchildren, Rachael Lopez of Austin, TX, A-Jay Sanchez of Socorro, NM, Gillie, Daniel, Patrick, Patrice, Kelli, and Jordan Lopez, all of Las Vegas; and by numerous other relatives. He was born in Wagon Mound, NM on January 11, 1922 and grew up on the family ranch in Watrous, NM. He graduated from Wagon Mound High S!
chool and received his BA and MA Degrees from New Mexico Highlands University. He married Rosaline Bustamante on June 10, 1950 in Pecos, NM, a union that reached 55 years. She preceded him in death on July 3, 2005. As an athlete, Lopez played sports for NMHU from 1941 thru 1944 and then in 1948. He coached at West Las Vegas High School for more than 30 years and served as one of the founding fathers of the school. The West Las Vegas High School Gymnasium was named after him. He was an educator and administrator for 34 years and retired in 1981. He was an active supporter of the Democratic Party of New Mexico and last year attended the Democratic National Convention. A visitation will be held on Tuesday in St. Francis Chapel at Gonzales Funerals & Cremations, 2315 Hot Springs Blvd. from 10:00 a.m. until 3:30 p.m. and from 4:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. in the Gillie Lopez Gymnasium at West Las Vegas High School followed by a Rosary there at 7:00 p.m. The Mass of Christian Burial !
will be celebrated on Wednesday, September 7, 2005 at 10:00 a.m. from
Our Lady of Sorrows Church. The interment will follow in the family plot in Mt. Calvary Cemetery. The family has requested memorials be sent to the Gillie Lopez Memorial Fund, c/o Danny Lopez, 500 Valencia Street, Las Vegas, NM 87701. Arrangements are under the direction of Billy G. Rogers at Gonzales Funerals & Cremations, 2315 Hot Springs Blvd., 425-9319.
