Rosary services are set for John Anthony Papen Jr., Berino, who died Fri. in a local hospital following a one car accident Thurs. night. Nelson's Funeral Home Chapel.
Mr. Papen, 51, is survived by his wife, Helen, three sons, John 3rd, Frank B. & Terrance Papen, all of Berino; five daughters, Mrs. Beth Powell, Albuquerque; Mrs. Paul Boushelle, Santa Fe, & Molly, Bridget & Margaret Papen, all of Berino; a brother, Frank O. Papen, Las Cruces; a sister, Mrs. Aleta Henri & his father, John Papen, both os Sonora, CA; three g-children.
Mr. Papen was administrative assistant for the State Land Office. He was returing to Berino from Santa Fe Thur. night when the accident occurred. The crash scene was about nine miles south of Hatch on U. S. Highway 85. The car in which Mr. Papen & Las Cruces attorney E. E. Chavez were riding overturned on a curve.
Mr. Papen, member of a pioneer Las Vegas, NM family, first operated a life insurance agency in Las Vegas. He moved to Ls Cruces in 1941, operating an agency here. He served in the U. S. Navy during WW2 in the Southwest Pacific.
Active locally in the Knights of Columbus & the Lions Club.
