Padre Martinez of Taos was often in conflict and at times in outright rebellion to the Catholic authorities in NM, often for his insistence and practice of using the Bible in his sermons and encouraging lay use of the Bible. Padre Martinez later became closely aligned with Protestants. His family later had ties to the Presbyterian community in NM (one attended a Prebyterian seminary).
Although small in number there were branches of extended NM (and southern CO) Hispano families that converted from Catholicism to Protestant beginning in 1852; surnames of some of the convert families included: BACA, CHAVEZ, PEREA, GONZALES, COSTALES, GUTIERREZ, MANZANARES, CISNEROS, ROMERO, MARTINEZ, SANCHEZ, PADILLA, QUINTANA, RENDON, ATENCIO, CANDELARIA, BARELA, etc. etc. Some of the BACAs, primarily in Socorro County (Socorro, Lemitar, Escondida), were very active in the early Baptist and Methodist churches in the later part of the 19th century.
More info is on the website previously mentioned.
