I had someone obtain a Pioneer Card from the Sacramento
State Library file for my Great-Grandfather, N. Kuttner. It was filled out
by one of his grandsons, Edgar Levey, and told when and where he had arrived
in New York, from Prussia, in the 1850's and then went by boat to Panama,
crossed to the Pacific and continued by boat to San Francisco. Like a great
many things this information is only as good as the person supplying it.
However, Edgar was fairly well acquainted with his grandfather, he was the
enumerator for the 1900 census district in which his grand parents lived in
San Francisco. Anyway, like anything else in genealogy, its a crap shoot,
but in my opinion worth trying. The FHC people microfilmed the State
Library card file in I believe 1966 and it's available as microfiche. There
are about 700,000 entries on 550 microfiche. Costs about $80 or so to get,
but for California researchers in the boonies, it's worthwhile, or so I
thought. Only question is what's been added since 1966.
Regards,
Larry Kuttner
