Subject: SOCIAL SECURITY DEATH INDEX ZIP CODES
Date: Sun, 17 Jan 1999 00:05:34 -0800
Quite often a lookup in the Social Security Death Index
will result in a final residence or death benefit ZIP code
location that will tend to tell the researcher where the
person was living when death occurred. Some times the
record will show the name of the location and some times
it will just show the ZIP code without a city location.
We have a NORCALLER who is a retired postal employee
who would know more about this than I do, but it appears
that for a final residence or death benefit ZIP to be in CA
it MUST be something like 91xxx to 95xxx. I was unable
to find out if 96xxx is being used. 97xxx is Oregon and
98xxx is Washington.
If the ZIP code starts with the numbers 1-8 it can not be
a CA zip code.
If only the ZIP code is given, one can go to the following
URL for a location.
http://www.usps.gov/ncsc/
If the source of the information for the request includes a
SSDI lookup, it would help others to know this fact and
what information the SSDI shows.
Hope this helps.
