Subject: SOCIAL SECURITY DEATH INDEX ZIP CODES

I have a zip code directory much older than Janie's, a Christmas handout
by a business. It says:

"The first digit of the ZIP Code indicateds one of the 10 geographic
areas. The second digit indicates a state, a portion of a heavily
populated state, or two or more less populated states within a geograpic
area. The third digit indicates a major destination area within the
state. This may be a large city post office or a mail concentration
point in a less populated area, known as a sectional center.

"The country has been divided into 552 sectional center areas as a basis
for the ZIP Code." (My Note: I believe there are more than 552
sectional center areas now than when this was written.)

"The last two digits of the ZIP Code indicates either a delivery station
of a large city post office or a post office serviced by a sectional
center.

"To illustrate how ZIP Code works, ZIP Code 95610 directs mail from
anywhere in the nation specifically to California, one of the states in
the geographic division 9, then to a further subdivision 95 (North
California), and then to sectional center 956 (Sacramento). Finally, the
last two digits 95610 direct the mail to Citrus Heights, California, a
post office serviced by the Sacramento Sectional Center."

This may or may not help anyone with SSDI Zip Codes, but I've used it to
trace unincorporated towns not on maps in pre-internet days. No,
Avondale isn't listed.
