An old medical dictionary defines milk leg (phlegmasia alba dolens) as
phlebitis of the femoral vein, occasionally following parturition
(childbirth) and typhoid fever; characterized by swelling of the leg, usually
without redness.
Now it would be called thrombophlebitis. Death may occur if the patient
"threw" a clot, leading to pulmonary embolus, or heart attack, or stroke.
