Hi Norcalers,

In addition to the listing of regular U.S. Army and U.S. Navy officers
who served in the Mexican War, there were numerous volunteer unit
officers who served for various lengths of time in different places in
Mexico. It's possible that your ancestor may have been a member of one
of these volunteer units prior to going to California. [Remember the
Gold Rush started the year after the war ended ;)].

Title of two-volume book: "History of the Mexican War" by General Cadmus
M. WILCOX, edited by his niece, Mary Rachel WILCOX. Published in
Washington D.C. by The Church News Publishing Company in 1892. [This
book details the battles in mainland Mexico.]

For specific information about the battles in Baja California I suggest
"Surfboats and Horse Marines, U.S. Naval Operations in the Mexican War,
1846-48" by K. Jack BAUER. Published by United States Naval Institute,
copyrighted 1969. This book contains an index of many of the officer's
names and the battles. correspondence, etc. they were involved in during
the war.

[I also have a complete listing of the members of the First Regiment of
New York Volunteers, who were mustered out at Monterey, CA in 1848 after
the war ended. Many, if not most, of these soldiers spent the rest of
their lives in California.]

The following is a listing of the rosters of all the volunteer units
involved in the Mexican War as detailed in "History of the Mexican War."
Under each heading in the appendix of Volume II, all of the officers are
named in order by rank, as well as whether they served in the Civil War.
If they died before 1892, that information is also listed, in many cases.
