From a numbering perspective, 1 is a state highway, and 99 and 101 are the
two westernmost federal highways. (I now live 1 mile from U.S. 1 - the
easternmost - in Virginia)

From a traveling perspective, I went from Stinson Beach on Highway 1 to 101
near Legget and then towards 99 out of Crescent City, connecting in Grants
Pass, OR. This was to Portland in the 50s.

Also in the late 50s, we used to figure 14 hours for Portland to San
Francisco via 99 and the Winters cutoff. 99 was two lanes most of the way
(at least north of Redding)

Are you expecting either elected officials, or bureaucrats to be logical ??
