[pgs. 2, 3, & 4 filmed after p.1 of the May 1st issue]
Born -- at Santa Ana valley, May 19th, 1875, to the wife of Mr. John
REED, a daughter.
Married -- at San Juan, May 20th, 75, at the Baptist Church, by the Rev.
T.W. BROTHERTON, of San Francisco; Miss Fanny CANFIELD to Arthur L.
GRAEME.
[After participating in the pleasures of a picnic, the young bride and
groom proceeded to Santa Cruz to spend the honeymoon.]
Married -- at Hollister, May 19th, by Judge HUNT, Peter FAULKERSON to
Mary RODREGOS of Gilroy.
**All About Hollister -- Hollister North --
Within the past year this portion of the town has attracted the notice of
new settlers. Through the enterprise of Wilts CHAPPELL and Mr. SALLY, who
have held out inducements for settlement by a judicious division of their
lands into building lots, we are inclined to believe that in contrast
with other parts of Hollister this has been the most rapid in its growth
of improvements. Lots 50x140 have been selling in this direction from $40
to $60 each, on terms convenient to purchasers, and the wisdom of this
liberal business policy is seen in the numerous habitations already
constructed and in course of erection all over this eligible property.
Mr. CHAPPELLs land, embracing 172 acres, is now all divided into small
tracts of from 1 to 40 acres and he is selling it from $100 to $150 per
acre. Among the settlers we find Messrs. CHAPPELL, HOFFMAN, FARISH,
BROTHERTON, HUNTLEY, PHILIPS, ROBERTS, HALEY, SULLIVAN, GRAY, McCRAY and
ELKINS, all of whom own from 2 to 5 acres each. Peter HUNTLEY and Jim
GRAY have on their respective lots planted out a splendid stock of young
fruit trees which appear to be all thriftily growing Mr. A.L. FARISH is
building a handsome and well designed house which will cost when
completed about $2000. Mr. BROTHERTON has also one nearly ready for
occupancy. Both these houses are situated in about the centre of the
CHAPPELL addition and they command a view of a magnificent range of
country. This ranch is well protected from the winds by the hill land on
the west Mrs. McCARTY, a lady of some means, has just let a contract for
the building of several tenement cottages
**From Tres Pinos to the Quien Sabe Rancho --
By invitation of a friend, we are induced to visit the residence of Senor
HERNANDEZ, which is situated about 10 miles from Tres Pinos, in a south
easterly direction. Passing through the lands of Juan INDARTE on what is
now declared a county road, we enter upon the domain lately owned by
Senor BOLADO. On each side of our way we pass an extensive hill range
over which the cattle roam in quiet retirement After passing through
several gates we catch a view of attractive fields of grain swayed into
wavy motion by the zephyrs of the hills. Stately and brave old oaks stand
like the sentinels of time forming groves of shade and furnishing a
harbor for the little birds that whistle out their notes of melody and
make "music in the air." A farm house, outhouses, stables, barns,
corrals, water tanks, and other improvements here represent the late home
of Senor BOLADO. The house is well surrounded with shade trees and
shrubbery and a well cultivated garden is in the rear, where the vine,
fig, cherry, peach, orange, cypress and blue gums grow and flourish.
Water for irrigation and farm wants is conveyed from a mountain spring
and the supply is about to be augmented by connection with a spring more
distant. Springs about in every part of this extensive ranch. The wisdom
of Senor BOLADO is exhibited in dividing the ranch into enclosed fields.
All are fenced and all embrace a spring of water. The arrangement is an
excellent one for the accommodation of stock From our elevated point of
observation, the eye ranges over a large part of the land recently
purchased by Senor HERNANDEZ for $140,000. We learn that this gentleman
contemplates moving his residence from Buena Vista ranch to this
beautiful locality. He should also transfer the name of Buena Vista
We proceed on our way with our influential friend, whom we were fortunate
in having with us, as he is one of the most expert gate openers and
linguists in the country We arrived before noon at HERNANDEZ ranch and
were introduced to Jesus HERNANDEZ and Mr. MARSDEN, who treated us with
gentlemanly consideration and courtesy. We had arrived at a busy time. 35
shearers were at work stripping the sheep of their fleeces and we looked
upon the operation of shearing with some interest Senor HERNANDEZ has but
1 shearing annually, so that his wool is always long and heavy we were
astonished to find some fleeces weigh 13 and 14 pounds each Senor
HERNANDEZ has directed his intelligent attention to the improvement of
breeds and has among his immense flocks, through his experiments, a very
superior stock. The general arrangement and management of the business is
as perfect as possible and reflect credit upon Mr. HERNANDEZ and his
assistants.
***Gilroy Correspondence --

**A Wild Horse -- A few evenings since, a quixotic horse, possessed with
the devil or too much oats, made a clean break through 9 picket fences in
the SW part of town. He performed the astonishing feat without bodily
damage. Messrs. PECK and YOST, seeing the war like steed, rushing forward
and forcing aside everything in its path, turned pale and closed their
doors, anticipating that if either house was in his way, he would tunnel
it, sure.
**Left -- Adam HOLLOWAY, the late host of the Holloway House at
Hollister, has leased the old Exchange hotel at Gilroy Mrs. HOLLOWAYs

8 inches and the heads were full and developed. WATSON says he has 10
acres equal to this sample.

bone.
