Steve,
I am not sure, but Elsas could be the German name for Alsace ( like
Alsace-Lorraine now in France). I have always seen it spelled Elsass on
German maps. My great-grandfather (who came to San Francisco) was from a
part of Germany that was once a part of Alsace, in particular when Napoleon
took over the west bank of the Rhein River and annexed it to France for a
few years. But I think the connection between the French Alsace and the
German Elsass areas is much older than the early 1800s. I don't really know
much. Does anyone else know more about this, or any websites to look at?
