**************

Robert MATTHEWS returned from Alaska last Friday. He reports a very
discouraging trip, and says that Warren and Jas. MATTHEWS stopped over at
Seattle with a view of getting employment there, and that Joy KELLY went
to Watsonville and Jas. CHAMBERS returned home to Bitterwater. According
to Mr. MATTHEWS’ account the Cook Inlet section is greatly overrated. His
party worked for some time for R.M. SHACKELFORD’s company putting up
sluices and building a road. SHACKELFORD’s company has plenty of Los
Angeles capital back of it, but, so far, their prospects for getting any
returns from their venture is far from encouraging. Otto SHACKELFORD and
wife are with the party, and Mrs. SHACKELFORD has the distinction of
being the first white woman in that portion of Alaska. Mr. MATTHEWS,
although but 8 miles from the TOWLE Bros. diggings, did not visit them,
but he says it is reported that they have a good claim. He says that the
newspaper reports of men coming out of Alaska with large clean-ups are
generally exaggerated, and that a great rush to get out of the country
before winter sets in is under way.
